A Jesuit’s promise echoed across the ocean, destined for the shores of Cartagena. Here, before St. Peter Claver, S.J. Hall, on the Regis University campus, we connect with a spirit who traversed continents to serve. St. Peter Claver, S.J. Hall stands not just as a building, but as a testament to a man who dedicated his life to the enslaved. Peter Claver, born in Spain in 1580, felt a powerful call to serve God. He joined the Jesuits and volunteered for the Spanish colonies, arriving in Cartagena in 1610. Cartagena, a major hub of the slave trade, saw thousands of enslaved Africans arrive yearly under horrific conditions. Claver met the ships, descending into the disease-ridden holds to offer comfort, medicine, and the message of Christ. St. Peter Claver, S.J. Hall connects us to his legacy. He learned their languages and cultures, baptizing and catechizing an estimated 300,000 people. He tirelessly advocated for their humane treatment, challenging the brutal system. He saw them not as commodities, but as fellow Christians deserving of dignity. Even in his final years, confined to his room and neglected, Claver’s spirit remained unbroken. He accepted his suffering as penance. Upon his death in 1654, the city that once saw him as a nuisance recognized his saintly life, honoring him with a public funeral. St. Peter Claver, S.J. Hall on this campus reminds us of his enduring commitment to justice and compassion.
