Capers Hall is named for brothers Brigadier General Ellison Capers and Major Francis W. Capers. These men left an indelible mark on the history of The Citadel. Originally constructed in 1942, the first Capers Hall served for many years. It was home to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Zucker Family School of Education.
However, time takes its toll. The Citadel recognized the need for a modern learning environment. The old Capers Hall faced structural issues. There were concerns about its ability to withstand earthquakes. In 2019, The Citadel decided to replace Capers Hall with a new state-of-the-art facility.
The construction of the new Capers Hall was a significant undertaking. The project cost around $67 million. Woolpert was the architect of record. Creech & Associates Architects served as the design architect. Thompson Turner Construction led the construction.
The new Capers Hall opened in September 2023. This three-story building spans 97,500 square feet. It is 40 percent larger than the original.
Inside Capers Hall, you will find modern classrooms. These classrooms feature smart technology. They also have customizable infrastructure and advanced audio-visual aids. The building also includes a 250-seat performing arts auditorium. There is also an art gallery, a modern computer lab, and a training Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility.
Sustainability was a key consideration during the design and construction of Capers Hall. Materials from the old building were recycled. Concrete, masonry, and stucco were crushed and reused for the new building’s foundation and parking area. A roof-mounted photovoltaic solar-panel system helps offset energy usage. The Citadel is pursuing LEED Silver certification for Capers Hall.
The design of Capers Hall blends seamlessly with the rest of The Citadel’s campus. Its white stucco facade and the incorporation of the building’s original iron-frame light fixtures maintain the Moorish architecture.
