Beijing International Studies University’s history began with Premier Zhou Enlai. He recognized China’s need for skilled foreign language speakers. BISU was founded under his supervision. The university first enrolled 646 students in September 1964. Its establishment ceremony occurred on October 24 1964. This date has been celebrated as the university’s anniversary ever since.

Initially Beijing International Studies University focused on foreign languages. The curriculum included Chinese literature arts and philosophy. It also covered international relations political economy and physical education. BISU offered programs in 14 foreign languages. These included English French Spanish Arabic and German.

The university faced challenges during the Cultural Revolution. It changed administration several times. It was successively managed by the Foreign Ministry the Beijing Government the Ministry of Education and the National Tourism Administration.

In the 1980s BISU began to shape Chinese tourism education. The National Tourism Administration established tourism management programs. Beijing International Studies University gained recognition as a leading institution for tourism studies.

Until 2003 the university was known as Beijing Second Foreign Language University. The name changed to reflect its diverse programs. BISU is now known for its business administration and foreign language programs. It offers courses in multiple languages. These include English Japanese German and Russian. BISU is also one of the first authorized HSK test centers in Beijing. It is recognized as a top university for Chinese study.

BISU’s campus is located in Chaoyang District. It comprises three continuous campuses. The university also has facilities in other parts of the city. A new campus is planned for Tongzhou. BISU’s central campus features contemporary and antique architecture. It has been honored as a Garden Campus since 1994.

Academically Beijing International Studies University is divided into four disciplines. These are Arts Business Administration Economics and Law and Political Sciences. Teaching and research are organized by departments schools and institutes. The university has numerous research centers. These include the Institute of Tourism Development and the Institute for Transcultural Studies.

Beijing International Studies University’s global partnerships extend to over 130 institutions. The university is known for its international student education. BISU provides a range of degree programs for international students.

Student life at Beijing International Studies University is vibrant. The BISU Union hosts a welcome party for new students. The university also hosts cultural weeks. These celebrate German French and Italian cultures.
