Maria Hilfe der Christen or St Marien as it’s sometimes called is the Roman Catholic church in Quickborn. It’s a vital part of the parish of Hl Martin based in Elmshorn. Its history is deeply intertwined with the changing religious landscape of Quickborn. During the 16th century the Reformation swept through this area making it predominantly Lutheran. However Catholicism persisted. Catholics in Quickborn were initially served by priests from St Joseph’s Church in Altona.

Then came the dramatic shifts after World War II. The influx of refugees from Eastern Europe significantly increased the Catholic population. This led to the construction of a smaller church. This first iteration of Maria Hilfe der Christen was consecrated in 1953. It served the community for many years. It was expanded with bells in 1955 and a parish hall in 1963. The church underwent renovations reflecting the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council culminating in a new altar consecration in 1970. Quickborn eventually became an independent parish in 1973. But its growth outpaced the original building’s capacity. Sadly the old building proved too small and was ultimately demolished in 1998.

The church you see today is the result of ambitious planning. Construction began in 1997. The architects Friedhelm Grundmann and Mathias Hein designed this modern masterpiece working in collaboration with local architect Bernhard Breuninger. The three bells dedicated to Ansverus Ansgar and Mary were cast in 1999. The church was finally consecrated in 2000 by Archbishop Ludwig Averkamp. Its design beautifully blends geometric forms. The layout incorporates both squares and triangles creating a visually stunning and spiritually uplifting space.

Maria Hilfe der Christen stands as a symbol of enduring faith. It’s a vibrant part of the Quickborn community a testament to the perseverance of its parishioners and a striking example of modern church architecture. It’s more than just a place of worship it’s a story etched in stone and glass a story that continues to unfold.
