Stepping back in time, imagine Hanoi in 2003. Picture the creation of a new district, Phường Gia Thụy, carved from pieces of history. Phường Gia Thụy emerged from the former Gia Lâm district. It combined the bustling energy of Gia Lâm town with the serene atmosphere of Gia Thụy village. This union brought together 77.68 hectares and 7,207 people from Gia Lâm town. It also incorporated 42.64 hectares and 2,514 residents from Gia Thụy village. Imagine the merging of these two distinct communities. They formed the vibrant tapestry that is modern Phường Gia Thụy. The history of Phường Gia Thụy stretches back even further. Gia Thụy village, once known as Gia Thực or Chợ Da, held a prominent position. It stood as the leading village within Gia Lâm district during the late Lê and early Nguyễn dynasties. It was part of the broader Thuận An prefecture within Kinh Bắc province. Later, in 1831, Kinh Bắc was renamed Bắc Ninh province. During the French colonial era, Gia Thụy village, nestled within the larger Toàn Thắng commune, played a significant role in the resistance against French rule. Following land reforms, Toàn Thắng commune was divided, giving rise to Tiên Bố commune. This commune became part of Hanoi’s outer district VIII. In 1961, Tiên Bố transformed into Gia Thụy commune. It became integral to Gia Lâm district. Finally, in 2003, Gia Thụy commune transitioned into the urban Phường Gia Thụy within the newly established Long Biên district. This marked a significant shift. It brought Gia Thụy into the heart of Hanoi’s urban landscape. Today, Phường Gia Thụy encompasses 1.2 square kilometers. It is home to 15,835 people, creating a vibrant community. As you stroll through its streets, remember the layers of history beneath your feet.
