Seven hundred years ago, this area was a small Khmer village known as Prey Nokor. Today, we stand in Xã Tam An, a district of Ho Chi Minh City. Xã Tam An showcases the blend of Ho Chi Minh City’s past and present. Ho Chi Minh City itself, originally named Saigon, has a history as rich and layered as the silt deposited by the Saigon River. For centuries, this region was part of the Khmer kingdom. Vietnamese settlers began arriving in the 17th century, marking the start of Saigon’s transformation. In 1698, Nguyễn Hữu Cảnh solidified Vietnamese control, laying the groundwork for the bustling metropolis we know today. Xã Tam An, as part of Ho Chi Minh City, also bears the marks of French colonialism. The French captured Saigon in 1859. It became the capital of Cochinchina, a French colony. This era saw Saigon evolve into a major port, with grand boulevards and European architecture. This influence is still visible in districts across Ho Chi Minh City. During the Vietnam War, Saigon served as the headquarters for U.S. military operations. The city’s fate changed drastically in 1975 when North Vietnamese troops captured Saigon, renaming it Ho Chi Minh City in 1976. Xã Tam An, like the rest of Ho Chi Minh City, transitioned into a new era. The city underwent economic shifts, focusing on self-sufficiency. Ho Chi Minh City, including Xã Tam An, has experienced rapid growth since the 1990s. The city’s blend of historical influences, from Khmer and French to Vietnamese, creates a unique tapestry. Xã Tam An, within this vibrant city, continues to evolve, playing its part in Ho Chi Minh City’s ongoing story. Today, Ho Chi Minh City, and Xã Tam An within it, stands as a testament to its resilience. It embraces its past while forging ahead as a major economic and cultural hub in Southeast Asia.
