Picture the golden spire of Wat Doi Pao piercing the Chiang Mai sky. This isn’t just any temple. Wat Doi Pao stands as a testament to the Shan community’s enduring faith. Established in 1883 it was the first temple in Chiang Mai built specifically for the Shan people. Many Shan had migrated from the Shan States in northeastern Burma. They sought work in the teak logging industry. They needed a place to practice their unique form of Buddhist worship.

King Inthawichayanon the seventh ruler of Chiang Mai played a key role. He and his Shan consort Mom Bualai supported the temple’s creation. They collaborated with Shan community members to establish this spiritual home. The temple’s name itself “Wat Pa Pao” translates to “grove of Pao trees temple”. It refers to the grove where the temple was built.

Wat Doi Pao’s architecture is stunning. It showcases the distinctive Burmese-Shan style. The bell-shaped chedi stands proudly. It sits on a triple-tiered square base. A golden spire and hti top this magnificent structure. Four qilin mythical creatures with a lion’s body and a dragon’s head adorn each corner.

Nearby an assembly hall boasts a seven-tiered Burmese-style pyatthat roof. To the west another assembly hall is mostly teak. Its striking multi-tiered zeitawun wooden roof is richly decorated. Stylized scenes of Mount Meru are painted on it. The temple also houses a Thai Ping style Buddha image dating back to 1487. Many other Buddha images here display clear Shan or Burmese characteristics.

Wat Doi Pao isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant community center. It serves as a hub for the annual Poy Sang Long festival. This three-day festival in April celebrates the induction of boys as novice monks. It features a colourful procession of Shan people in traditional clothing parading through Chiang Mai. The temple also provides schooling for children in the Shan dialect.

So as you stand before Wat Doi Pao remember this. It is more than a beautiful structure. It’s a living testament to the faith resilience and cultural heritage of the Shan people in Chiang Mai. A place where history faith and community intertwine. It’s a truly special place. A place you won’t soon forget.
