Founded in 1898 the Hannoversche Burschenschaft Arminia stands before you. This student fraternity boasts a rich history deeply intertwined with Hanover’s academic landscape. Its story began not in isolation but as a merger. Five members or former members of the Burschenschaft Germania joined forces with the Frankonia fraternity. This union created Arminia on June 25 1898. Their initial colors were blue red and gold. Their motto however remained constant Ehre Freiheit Vaterland Honor Freedom Fatherland.
Initially the Arminia found its home in a rented space. They moved several times before finally purchasing their own building at Oeltzenstrasse 22 in 1912 for 50000 gold marks. The grand opening was held on March 1 1913. This building became a significant hub. It even hosted the founding of the Rheinischer Ring a network of student fraternities on July 4 1920.
The Arminia’s history wasn’t without its shadows. The rise of Nazism cast a long shadow. In 1933 members participated in the infamous book burning. Some Arminia members held prominent positions within the Nazi student organizations. After World War II the Arminia faced significant challenges. The Allied occupation initially prevented its activities. The fraternity eventually resumed in 1950.
The post-war era brought internal conflicts. The Arminia questioned traditional practices. This led to clashes with the Deutsche Burschenschaft. Suspensions and disagreements marked this period. Ultimately the Arminia left the Deutsche Burschenschaft in 2012. They later joined the Allgemeine Deutsche Burschenschaft in 2016 a different student fraternity association.
The Hannoversche Burschenschaft Arminia is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to student life in Hanover.
