Across 200 acres of Detroit’s east side stretches Chandler Park. This isn’t just any park. It’s Detroit’s fourth largest a sprawling green space with a rich history.
Chandler Park’s story begins long before its official naming in 1926. The land was once part of Grosse Pointe Township annexed by Detroit in 1917. Some areas may have even served as a park for Grosse Pointe residents.
The 1920s were a time of growth for Detroit. The booming auto industry fueled the city’s coffers. This allowed for ambitious investments in infrastructure including parks. Chandler Park benefited greatly from this era. A challenging golf course was built along with swimming pools and acres of green space. The park’s namesake Zachariah Chandler was a powerful 19th-century politician and a prominent abolitionist.
The Great Depression slowed development. Post-World War II population growth prompted discussions of building a school in the park but this never came to fruition. Financial difficulties later hampered major improvements.
However Chandler Park’s story is far from over. In 2015 a $20 million renovation plan was announced. This ambitious project included creating wetlands new sports fields and tennis courts. The plan also involved establishing a new charter school the Lighthouse Academy. This school with a focus on ecological issues planned to involve students in park management and wetland conservation. Funding came from various sources including Fiat-Chrysler America the Kellogg and Kresge Foundations and the United Auto Workers.
This renovation represents a commitment to revitalizing not just the park itself but also the surrounding Chandler Park neighborhood.
