Savang Vadhana was a half-sister and queen of King Chulalongkorn. She later became known as the Queen Grandmother of Thailand. All her children died before her. But she lived to see her grandsons Ananda Mahidol and Bhumibol Adulyadej take the throne.
Born in 1862, Savang Vadhana was the 27th daughter of King Rama IV. Her marriage to Chulalongkorn produced several children. These included Crown Prince Maha Vajirunhis and Prince Mahidol Adulyadej.
The Royal Villa of Princess Consort Savang Vadhana is more than just a building. It is a testament to her life. It is a place where her spirit seems to linger. Savang Vadhana also adopted several of her husband’s children. She raised them as her own. Her dedication to family was truly remarkable. Even though all of her biological children died before she did.
When King Prajadhipok abdicated in 1935, Ananda Mahidol acceded to the throne. Savang Vadhana received the title of Queen Grandmother. She had been renamed Sri Savarindira by King Prajadhipok.
Queen Sri Savarindira was also the grandmother of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. She witnessed two of her grandsons become king. That must have filled her with immense pride. The Queen also helped establish a hospital in Si Racha District. It is now known as Queen Savang Vadhana Memorial Hospital. The Thai Red Cross Society operates it.
In her later years, Queen Savang Vadhana resided at Sa Pathum Palace. This palace is located behind Siam Paragon in downtown Bangkok. She died in 1955 at the age of 93. Her ashes were interred at Wat Ratchabophit. A residence of the queen can still be seen at Bang Pa-In Royal Palace.
Today, we remember her through the Queen Savang Vadhana Museum. It is located in the Tamnak Yai Mansion inside Sa Pathum Palace. The Queen Savang Vadhana Foundation continues her legacy. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn founded it in 2005. She is her great-granddaughter.
