China’s very first Y-shaped pedestrian bridge graces the intersection of Jiaomen River and Wuzhouyong. This architectural marvel, known as Juxing Bridge, is more than just a bridge. It’s a testament to innovative design and a symbol of the vibrant energy of Nansha district in Guangzhou. The Jiaomen Bridge opened to the public in January 2024. Its unique Y-shape is formed by a 120-degree symmetrical three-stage beam arch combination. This innovative design wasn’t just for show. It was chosen as the shortest distance to span the waterway in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The Jiaomen Bridge’s three beams, each stretching 86 meters long and 10.2 meters wide, reach a height of 21 meters. These massive steel structures, divided into 95 segments, consumed a staggering 4,000 tons of steel. The construction of the Jiaomen Bridge wasn’t without its challenges. Engineers had to overcome numerous technical hurdles. Their ingenuity resulted in six invention patents and two utility model patents. These patents filled a gap in China’s construction knowledge, specifically regarding Y-shaped pedestrian bridges. But the Jiaomen Bridge is more than just a feat of engineering. It’s a bridge that connects communities and cultures. Its deck extends to Nansha Innovation Bay. This connection helps to integrate the diverse cultural characteristics of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. The bridge is now a vital part of Nansha’s slow-travel system. It encourages pedestrian traffic and enhances the area’s aesthetic appeal. It’s also become a significant boost to cross-strait tourism, showcasing Nansha’s ecological beauty and drawing visitors from near and far.
