Born amidst a raging thunderstorm, a child named Fuen, meaning “quake,” entered the world. He would later be known as Khru Ba Srivijaya. This seemingly ordinary birth in the village of Ban Pang, Lamphun Province, foreshadowed the extraordinary life of a man who would become a revered figure in Northern Thailand. Here at the foot of Doi Suthep, his golden statue stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. Khru Ba Srivijaya dedicated his life to Buddhism. He was ordained as a novice at 18 and later took the religious name Phra Siwichai. His devotion and compassion were evident from a young age. Stories tell of him releasing animals his father had trapped and pleading for the lives of fish. Khru Ba Srivijaya’s profound empathy extended to all beings, shaping his path toward spiritual leadership. Khru Ba Srivijaya was deeply involved in the construction and renovation of over 100 temples. His projects included prominent temples like Wat Phra Singha and Wat Suan Dok in Chiang Mai, as well as Wat Phrathat Haripunchai and Wat Chamadevi in Lamphun. But perhaps his most remarkable feat was the construction of the road up Doi Suthep. Imagine thousands of villagers, inspired by Khru Ba Srivijaya’s vision, working tirelessly to carve a path up the mountain. This road, completed in just five months and twenty-two days, opened access to the revered Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Khru Ba Srivijaya himself inaugurated the road, his car being the first vehicle to ascend the newly built path. Khru Ba Srivijaya’s influence extended beyond construction projects. He was known for his charisma and deep connection with the people. He was not a monk of rank, but a monk of the people. He attracted a large following who revered him for his piety and good works. His dedication earned him the title “nak bun haeng lanna,” meaning “Lanna saint.” Khru Ba Srivijaya’s statue here serves as a constant reminder of his contributions. His spirit continues to inspire those who visit, reflecting his lasting impact on the region. He is remembered not just for the structures he built, but for the unwavering compassion and devotion that guided his life.
