Slipping through time’s tapestry, we find ourselves before the Tour Noire – Zwarte Toren. This isn’t just another tower. It’s a sentinel, a silent observer of Brussels’ bustling evolution. The Tour Noire, or Black Tower as it’s known in English, whispers tales of a time when fortified walls embraced the city. Imagine Brussels in the early 13th century. The Tour Noire, a formidable part of the city’s first line of defense, stood tall against potential invaders. These walls, stretching nearly 4 kilometers and enclosing 80 hectares, were the guardians of medieval Brussels. Yet, time marches relentlessly forward. By the 14th century, a new set of fortifications rendered the Tour Noire and its brethren obsolete. Most of the original wall met its demise. The Tour Noire, however, defied this fate, transitioning into private ownership. This change likely saved it from destruction. The tower adapted to the changing times. In the 16th century, as a new dock arose nearby for Brussels’ inland port, the Tour Noire was remarkably spared. It even found new life as a tavern, aptly named “In the Tower”. Fast forward to the 19th century. The area surrounding the Tour Noire faced sanitation and redevelopment. Demolition loomed. But Brussels’ then-mayor, Charles Buls, recognized the tower’s historical value and intervened. Architect Victor Jamaer took on the task of restoring the tower, reconstructing the gable, roof, and the bent radius. The tower continued to be woven into the city’s fabric. It became enveloped by a clothing store, a testament to its adaptability. The 20th century cemented the Tour Noire’s legacy. In 1937, it earned recognition as a state building and was classified as a historical monument. Today, it stands in stark contrast to the modern hotel that surrounds it. This juxtaposition highlights the Tour Noire’s enduring presence amidst the ever-changing landscape of Brussels. The Tour Noire even found its way into popular culture, featuring in “The Adventures of Nero,” a Belgian comic book series. The tower’s story is one of resilience, adaptation, and enduring significance. It has witnessed Brussels’ transformation over centuries, a silent sentinel observing the ebb and flow of history.
