Atop the dome sits a gilded pine cone. It represents Boston’s lumber industry and Maine which was part of Massachusetts when the building was completed.

The House of Representatives occupies a different chamber in a later addition. Hanging in the House chamber is the “Sacred Cod”. This symbolizes the importance of fishing to early Massachusetts. Murals by Albert Herter and Edward Brodney decorate the building. The murals are unique. They feature World War I women. The main doors of Doric Hall open only for special occasions. These include presidential or head-of-state visits. They also open when a governor leaves office or a regimental flag returns from war. A time capsule containing artifacts including coins and newspaper clippings from the late 18th century was rediscovered in 2014.
