Is this heaven? More than 250 people once filled the Father Capodanno Memorial Chapel at Fort Wadsworth. They gathered to honor the chaplain’s selfless service and pray for his canonization. The Father Capodanno Memorial Chapel stands as a testament to a man who lived and died for his faith and his country. Father Vincent Capodanno, a Maryknoll missionary, felt a calling to serve his country during the Vietnam War. He became a Navy chaplain, earning the nickname “Grunt Padre” for his unwavering dedication to the Marines under his care. Father Capodanno went beyond the call of duty, sharing the same living conditions, dangers, and fears as the soldiers.

On September 4, 1967, during the fierce battle in Que Son Valley, Father Capodanno’s life took a tragic turn. Amidst the chaos and bloodshed, he saw a wounded corpsman pinned down by enemy fire. Despite his own injuries, Father Capodanno fearlessly rushed to help. As he administered aid and spiritual comfort, he was struck by a barrage of bullets and died a hero’s death at the age of 38. Father Capodanno’s extraordinary bravery and selflessness earned him the Medal of Honor in 1969. His story, however, doesn’t end there. The Father Capodanno Memorial Chapel is just one of the many places where his legacy is honored. From warships to streets and even scholarships, his name serves as a constant reminder of the power of faith, courage, and sacrifice.
