Serene stillness pervades the air. We stand before Le Centre Zen de Montréal. This unassuming building holds a rich history. It’s a testament to the dedication of Zengetsu Myokyo. She founded Le Centre Zen de la Main in 1995. Her vision was to bring the practice of Rinzai Zen to Montreal.
Myokyo’s journey began in 1980. She trained with Joshu Sasaki Roshi. She moved to Mount Baldy in 1985. Ordained a Zen monk in 1986 she practiced in California and New Mexico. Myokyo returned to Canada in 1995. This marked the beginning of Le Centre Zen de Montréal’s story. She was ordained a Zen Osho in 1999. She received the religious name Zengetsu. She continued her studies with Joshu Sasaki Roshi until his death in 2014.
Le Centre Zen de la Main was renamed Enpuku-ji in 2009. This reflects Myokyo’s temple name given by her teacher. Enpuku-ji means Temple of Full Prosperity. It’s an affiliate center of Rinzai-ji in Los Angeles. The center practices Rinzai Zen as taught by Kyosan Joshu Sasaki Roshi. The center thrived providing a strong practice environment. This included lay monks and practice residents.
A fascinating detail few know involves a resident dog. For almost 30 years a dog has lived at the Zen Centre. Listen is the latest resident. The presence of Listen has been a unique part of the training. It’s a testament to the center’s unique approach. Learning to be with Listen teaches communication and understanding.
The center is not only a place of practice. It has hosted the Montreal Zen Poetry Festival. Three festivals were held between 2007 and 2011. Renowned poets participated. The festival fostered collaborations with McGill University. It also linked with the Blue Metropolis Montreal International Literary Festival.
Today Le Centre Zen de Montréal continues to thrive. It welcomes newcomers and seasoned practitioners alike. Myokyo’s legacy lives on in its peaceful atmosphere. It’s a space for spiritual growth and community. Le Centre Zen de Montréal serves as a hub for the larger Buddhist community in Montreal.
