A legacy etched in time. That’s Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Methodist Kuala Lumpur. Right here before us stands a testament to education. It’s a story woven with threads of faith and hard work.

Established in July 1897 by Dr William T Kensett a British medical officer. He initially aimed to serve the Tamil community. He established a small school a humble Anglo-Tamil School. This was in a wooden shop house on Batu Road and Java Street.

The school was not always here on Petaling Hill. It moved several times. The buildings deteriorated. The sanitary board intervened. In 1904 it found its permanent home. Rev William E Horley renamed the school. It became the Methodist Boys’ School Kuala Lumpur. Within eight months a new building rose. Playing fields were laid. The legacy of Horley lives on not just in the name. The school is sometimes called Horley School. Some even mistakenly link it to a marble game popular among students. This is a fun fact.

The school’s anthem “Go Forward MBS” holds a fascinating history. It’s adapted from a Northwestern University marching band song. It was sung on Radio Malaya in 1949. The school boasts a rich history of co-curricular activities. There’s the 1st Kuala Lumpur Boys’ Brigade Company one of the oldest in Malaysia. The school also houses a remarkable library. It has attracted visitors from many other schools. It’s been lauded as a model.

In 2008 the school gained cluster school status. It’s also a High Performance School. Its alumni are diverse. They span various fields including academics business law politics media and medicine. Their achievements speak volumes about the school’s impact.

The school’s motto Ora et Labora “Pray and Work” resonates deeply. It reflects the spirit of this institution. A spirit of dedication hard work and faith. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Methodist Kuala Lumpur. More than a school. It’s a living history. A legacy of excellence.
