Wat Chaiya Sathan is a vibrant temple. It sits southeast of Chiang Mai in Saraphi district. We are heading towards Lamphun. This temple is not just a place of worship. It blends traditional artistry with modern technology.
Let’s talk about the Golden Teak Viharn. A generous family from Singapore funded its inauguration in 2014. The Golden Teak Viharn showcases local craftsmanship. It demonstrates how artisans shape the present. The use of teak makes it special. Its roof has five levels. This is much rarer than the usual three or four. The uppermost level shelters the entrance porch. Finely carved lambrequins adorn it. Inside, modern Buddhas sit serenely on the altar. Wat Chaiya Sathan also has a teak Ubosot. It was also inaugurated in 2014. But its size dwarfs the Viharn.
Between these two buildings stands the Chedi. It features a main stupa. Eight smaller stupas surround it. Hence, it is named Phra Phuttha Chedi 9 Yot. This translates to the Buddha stupa with nine points.
But, Wat Chaiya Sathan also embraces modernity. You might find electronic gadgets here. Talking donation boxes greet you. There is also an electronic fortune stick machine. This replaces the traditional Kau Chim. A monk might show you these technological wonders.
Most of the time the doors of Wat Chaiya Sathan are closed. We might make a short stop. If they are open, we can take a peek inside. Many times, we just admire the colorful exterior as we pass by the Ping River.
