Did the chilling whisper of “Cemitério Velho de Pedroso” ever reach your ears? This old cemetery, nestled beside the Mosteiro de Pedroso, holds a history as layered as the earth beneath its weathered stones. Cemitério Velho de Pedroso isn’t just a place of rest. It’s a silent chronicle of Pedroso’s past. It whispers tales of lives lived, loves lost, and the passage of time in this historic Portuguese village. Originally, Pedroso’s history began much earlier than its cemetery, at the Castro do Monte Murado. This ancient settlement dates back to 7 AD. It was inhabited by the Turduli Veteres, an ancient Iberian tribe. The settlement thrived along the Roman road connecting Olissipo (Lisbon) to Bracara Augusta (Braga). Imagine the bustle of Roman life right here, centuries ago. A key discovery in 1982 unveiled bronze plaques known as Tesserae Hospitales. These plaques documented pacts of hospitality, offering a glimpse into social customs of the era. They stand as the oldest written records of Pedroso, predating Portuguese nationality itself. Cemitério Velho de Pedroso echoes this rich history. The nearby Mosteiro de Pedroso, a Benedictine monastery, casts a long shadow, both literally and figuratively, over the Cemitério Velho de Pedroso. Its origins are shrouded in mystery, with conflicting accounts placing its founding somewhere between 867 and 1046. This monastery held significant influence, its authority extending across 37 parishes. Its lands stretched far and wide. Even Pope John XXI, once known as Frei Pedro Julião, served as its abbot. The monastery’s transition to the Benedictine Order around 1115-1120 marked a significant shift in its spiritual life. By 1560, its revenues were absorbed by the Colégio de Jesus de Coimbra, signifying the waning of its independent power. Yet, its presence remained a constant, its stones silently witnessing the changing tides of Pedroso. The Cemitério Velho de Pedroso holds within its embrace, the stories of those connected to the monastery, the village, and the surrounding lands. Each weathered tombstone is a fragment of a life lived, a connection to Pedroso’s vibrant past.
