Hidden within the sprawling Texas Medical Center, a beacon of scientific innovation shines brightly: the Texas A&M Institute of Biosciences and Technology, or IBT as it’s often called. Established in 1986, the IBT stands as a testament to the vision of the Texas A&M Board of Regents. They sought to create a hub of scientific and technological excellence. The IBT’s mission is clear: perform innovative translational biomedical research. They also want to transfer those discoveries to the classroom, clinic, and marketplace. The Texas A&M Institute of Biosciences and Technology isn’t just another research facility. It’s a dynamic force. It pushes the boundaries of biomedical science. It addresses critical health issues. The IBT is organized into four impactful Research Centers of Excellence. These centers focus on epigenetics and disease prevention, genomics and precision medicine, infectious diseases and inflammation, and translational cancer research. Over 30 distinguished faculty scholars drive the IBT’s groundbreaking research. The IBT boasts state-of-the-art facilities. These facilities bridge multiple disciplines in their quest to conquer human diseases. The institute fosters a collaborative environment. Faculty, staff, and trainees from the Texas A&M University System and the Texas Medical Center benefit from these outstanding Core Facilities. These facilities enable cutting-edge research. The areas of focus include advanced cellular and molecular imaging, epigenomics, high-throughput drug screening and analysis, bioinformatics, and molecular modeling. The Texas A&M Institute of Biosciences and Technology thrives thanks to the generosity of donors. Philanthropists, like Albert B. Alkek, played a crucial role in the development of the IBT’s impressive 11-story research tower. This $22 million structure, known as the “Alkek Building,” stands as a symbol of the IBT’s commitment to advancing health through discovery and education. The IBT has strong education programs in biotechnology and entrepreneurship. Many IBT faculty actively develop new intellectual property and startup companies. This commercializes their discoveries.
