Beneath the imposing obelisk of the Ossario della Battaglia di Magenta, secrets sleep. This isn’t just a monument. It’s a time capsule, echoing with the ghosts of a pivotal battle. The Ossario della Battaglia di Magenta commemorates the fallen soldiers of the Battle of Magenta, fought on June 4, 1859. This battle, a clash between the Austrian Empire and the allied forces of France and the Kingdom of Sardinia, marked a turning point in the Second Italian War of Independence. The Ossario della Battaglia di Magenta, designed by Milanese architect Giovanni Brocca, is no ordinary memorial. Its towering obelisk, 35 meters tall and 8 meters wide at its base, stands as a silent sentinel. Four identical facades, oriented to the cardinal directions, represent the wide reach of the conflict. Construction began in 1861, but the Ossario della Battaglia di Magenta wasn’t completed until 1872. This delay allowed for the meticulous gathering of the remains of the fallen soldiers, scattered across the battlefield and along the raised railway line. These remains now rest in the crypt beneath the obelisk. The Ossario della Battaglia di Magenta is a study in contrasts. The base is built from rough Moltrasio stone, while the obelisk itself is clad in yellowish Angera stone. Intricate bronze plaques, bearing the names of the French casualties, adorn the interior walls. Among them are plaques dedicated to General Espinasse, who died shortly after the battle, and General Cler, who fell in a separate engagement. Above, the vaulted ceiling depicts a starry sky, a poignant reminder of the eternal rest found within. Descend into the crypt, and you’ll find a stark reminder of the battle’s cost. The walls are lined with human bones, a silent testament to the over 5,000 lives lost. Two skeletons, one of a Hungarian soldier and the other a French Zouave, lie in the center. The Ossario della Battaglia di Magenta is more than just a memorial. It’s a tangible link to a pivotal moment in Italian history, a place where the echoes of battle still resonate. The Ossario della Battaglia di Magenta was inaugurated in 1904 by King Vittorio Emanuele III. In 2009, marking the 150th anniversary of the battle, the Ossario della Battaglia di Magenta and its surrounding park underwent a complete restoration. Today, the Ossario della Battaglia di Magenta stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made in the pursuit of freedom.
