Can you hear the silversmiths tapping nearby? Welcome to Wat Sri Suphan. This temple stands as a testament to Chiang Mai’s rich history of craftsmanship. It is more than just a temple. It is a living, breathing artwork.

Wat Sri Suphan dates back to around 1500. King Mueang Kaeo of the Mangrai Dynasty founded it. Within a decade the main structures rose. These included the assembly hall, ordination hall and the pagoda. A Buddha image was also consecrated at this time. Today only some teak pillars remain from the original build. They can be seen in the new assembly hall.

Haiya district surrounds us. This is the traditional silversmith area of Chiang Mai. For over 200 years, artisans have crafted silver and lacquerware here. Many moved here from Burma. The lacquerware industry has since moved east. But silver handicraft remains alive and well on Wualai Road. Wat Sri Suphan even teaches the art of metal and silver sheet repoussé and chasing.

The ordination hall is the highlight of Wat Sri Suphan. Its construction used silver, aluminum, and nickel paneling. Decorative metalwork sculpting adorns it. This hall is in active use. But remember women are barred from entering.

Much of the material is a mix of aluminum and silver. Some parts are pure silver. The artisans used repoussé and chasing techniques. Repoussé involves hammering from the inside. Chasing involves working on the outside.

In 2022 disaster struck. The pagoda collapsed after heavy rains. The outer cement shell had trapped moisture. This added weight to the earthen core. Buddhist artifacts were found in the remains.

Wat Sri Suphan is a community hub. It is a center for education, heritage, and handicrafts. Within the temple grounds, you will find a primary school and a silverware workshop. There is also a monk chat office.

Kawilorot Suriyawong constructed the assembly hall and chedi between 1860 and 1863. A major reconstruction occurred in 1993. The silver ordination hall was constructed between 2004 and 2016. It is a unique project completed by the community.

The temple is open from 6 AM to 6 PM. But on Saturdays Wualai Road transforms into a walking street. Then the temple stays open until 9:30 PM. Entrance is free. Donations are appreciated.

Wat Sri Suphan stands as a symbol. It shows the enduring legacy of Chiang Mai’s artisans. It shows the community’s dedication to preserving their heritage. Take a moment to appreciate the intricate details. Remember the history etched into every silver panel.
