Wat Ubosot

Why is Wat Ubosot called Wat Ubosot? The name, like many things at Wat Ubosot, holds layers of meaning. Wat Ubosot is the ordination hall, the most sacred space within the larger Wat Pho temple complex in Bangkok. It’s here, at Wat Ubosot, where monks receive their vows. This very hall was built by King Rama I. He chose the Ayutthaya style, a nod to tradition, and later, Rama III expanded it. Rama III, a king who valued education, envisioned Wat Pho, and Wat Ubosot in particular, as a center of learning. The intricate mother-of-pearl inlays on the teak doors of Wat Ubosot tell stories from the Ramayana, a silent lesson for those who enter. Inside, a golden Buddha sits atop a three-tiered pedestal, a symbol of authority under a nine-tiered umbrella. This Buddha image, the Phra Buddha Theva Patimakorn, has a history as rich as the temple itself. It’s believed to be from the Ayutthaya period and was brought here from another temple. Rama I placed some of his own ashes beneath it, linking his legacy to the Buddha. Surrounding the hall, the Phra Rabiang cloister holds hundreds of Buddha images. Each one, carefully chosen by Rama I, represents different periods of Siamese history. They’re a visual timeline, whispering stories of the past. Four viharns, halls within the cloister, house even more Buddha statues. Each statue has a name. Each name has a story. Wat Ubosot isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith, history, and the enduring power of storytelling.
