Were Blackrock Baths always in ruins? You might think so, seeing them now. But these skeletal remains once hosted a spectacle of swimming and social life. Blackrock Baths, built in 1839 by the railway company, initially offered simple bathing platforms. As sea-bathing’s popularity swelled, so did the baths. Rebuilt in 1887 with concrete elegance, they boasted separate pools for ladies and gentlemen. Imagine a sunny afternoon in 1928. The newly renovated Blackrock Baths, now with a 50-meter pool, buzzed with excitement. The Urban District Council had just purchased the baths, readying them for the prestigious Tailteann Games. Crowds thronged the edges of the pool, their cheers echoing as swimmers sliced through the water. The air vibrated with the thrill of competition, the splash of dives, and the laughter of spectators. Blackrock Baths weren’t just about swimming. They were a stage for grand galas, for the grace of water polo matches, for the heart-stopping feats of diving champion Eddie Heron. His name, etched on a plaque on the nearby railway bridge, still whispers of his undefeated reign. Sadly, the echoes of cheering crowds faded with time. By the late 1980s, the allure of indoor pools led to the baths’ closure. Left to the mercy of the elements, they crumbled, their grandeur a fading memory. In 2013, deemed unsafe, they were finally demolished, leaving behind these poignant ruins.
