A masterpiece of eclecticism greets you. This is the Villino Florio. It stands proudly on Viale Regina Margherita. Its Art Nouveau style is undeniable. Commissioned by Ignazio Florio Jr. this was no ordinary home. The Florio family were wealthy. They also owned the exquisite Villa Igiea. This villa though is uniquely their own.

Built between 1899 and 1902 the Villino Florio is more than just a house. It is a testament to a time of great wealth and cosmopolitan tastes. Architect Ernesto Basile designed it. He cleverly blended architectural styles. You see hints of neogothic turrets. You will also notice the unique dual entry staircases. These are common in Sicilian architecture. Basile interpreted them in a novel way. He incorporated baroque curves. He included typically Nordic trusses. He even added cylindrical turrets reminiscent of French castles. Romanesque columns and Renaissance ashlar also feature. The result is a harmonious blend.

The Villino Florio was once surrounded by a large garden. Now it is mostly surrounded by taller buildings. Sadly a fire in 1962 severely damaged the interiors. This was not just any fire. The sources mention a 1962 fire that damaged parts of the interior. The damage was extensive. Some say it was an arson attack during a time of great upheaval in Palermo. The restoration has been extensive. Visitors can now explore its restored beauty.

The interior was once lavish. Each floor served a specific purpose. The ground floor was dedicated to leisure. A billiard room was present there. The main floor held the grand salon and dining room. Residential areas with bedrooms were located upstairs. The top floor contained a unique room. It had a ship’s hull-shaped ceiling. Imagine the opulence. The furnishings themselves were original creations by the same architect.

The Villino Florio is much more than a house. It is a cultural treasure. It represents the Florio family’s wealth. It highlights Basile’s extraordinary architectural skill. It remains a symbol of Palermo’s rich history and heritage. Even today. Take a moment. Absorb the elegance and artistry of the Villino Florio. It is a true masterpiece of Art Nouveau. A true legacy of Sicily’s golden age.
