Whispers of ancient frogs. This is Jahyeonam. A place steeped in history and legend. Right before you stands Jahyeonam a Buddhist hermitage nestled within the grounds of Tongdosa Temple.
Jahyeonam’s story begins long before the temple itself. It’s said that the hermitage predates Tongdosa Temple. It was originally a simple hut built for monk Jajang-yulsa the very founder of Tongdosa. Jajang-yulsa is a pivotal figure in Korean Buddhism. He worshipped here before the grand temple was even conceived.
The legend of Jahyeonam is woven around golden frogs. Two ancient texts tell of these extraordinary amphibians. One text speaks of a frog with a blue body and golden lips. It could transform into a butterfly or bee. It resided in a small hole in a rock wall. Legend claims Jajang-yulsa himself imbued the frog with supernatural powers.
Another text describes Jajang-yulsa discovering golden frogs near a spring. He initially tried to remove them. But the frogs kept returning. He then realized their significance. He created a special hole for them a Geumwangong or ‘golden frog hole’. He wished for the frogs to protect Jahyeonam forever.
To this day people believe the descendants of those golden frogs live in that tiny hole. It is said they only appear to those with strong faith. Jahyeonam is a testament to the enduring power of belief and legend.
The hermitage itself is a beautiful place. It boasts a unique granite gate. Inside the small courtyard stands the main hall. Note the unique murals unlike any other. No depictions of the Buddha’s life. Instead a painting of Jajang-yulsa creating the golden frog’s home. Behind this hall is the famous finger-sized hole.
Beyond the main hall stands a four-meter-tall stone carving. The Rock-Carved Amitabha Buddha Triad. A masterpiece dating back to 1896. It’s a singular work of art within the grounds of Tongdosa Temple.
Jahyeonam may be small. It holds immense cultural and religious significance. The stories of its origins the legend of the golden frogs. They make Jahyeonam a truly unique and unforgettable place. It is truly a hidden gem worthy of your time and reflection.
