“供養・お祭り”. That is what the locals seek at Kouzenji Temple. It’s written on a website but it holds more meaning than just words.
Kouzenji Temple is a Jodo Shinshu temple. It belongs to the Honganji Sect. The temple may seem simple. Yet, it holds a deep connection to the community.
Let’s step back in time. Imagine the sounds of children echoing. Picture a gathering known as “Houon Kodomo-kai”. This tradition began nearly 30 years ago by the former resident priest Okuda Yoshimasa. He wanted to bridge the gap between the temple and the local children.
The “Houon Kodomo-kai” was more than just fun. It was a way to express gratitude. It followed a Houonko service. Children enjoyed Kamishibai storytelling and picture book readings. There were also puppet shows. These events were supported by the Shirohato Tanpopo Bunko. This is a children’s library activity led by the former Sama, Okuda Yuko.
Imagine children’s laughter filling the air. They helped each other. They have continued this tradition every year for 30 years.
The former Sama humbly said: “We haven’t continued it. We have been allowed to continue by the support of various people.” She also said: “I can’t do anything special.” “I just think it’s good that the children remember that the temple doors are always open to them.”
These words strike a chord. In today’s world do we force our beliefs on others? Kouzenji Temple shows us a different path. It connects with the community. It welcomes everyone. It embraces children regardless of their background. Here lies the essence of Shinshu.
Today the current resident priest Okuda Seiji invites everyone to the “Houon Kodomo-kai”. He hopes children will encounter something special there. The temple even created a character called “Button-kun” to help foster children’s gatherings.
The priest said: “Whether you are near or far please come and experience something through Button-kun”. The activities of Kodomo-kai are not just for fun. They want children to grow up with rich hearts. Richness includes joy and sadness.
Kouzenji Temple embodies the connection between the temple and the community. It fosters a desire to nurture rich hearts. The temple’s true form lies within. It’s not just a building. It is a welcoming space for all.
