Cafe Bazar opened its doors on September 23rd 1909. Richard Tomaselli founded it. He was the brother of Otto Tomaselli. Otto had inherited the 100-year-old Cafe Tomaselli.
This building itself dates back to the 1880s. The Ceconi brothers, famous Salzburg architects, designed it. Initially, the building housed many small shops. People called it the bazar building. Hence, the name Cafe Bazar.
The Cafe Bazar quickly became a hub for artists and intellectuals. Author Anton Kuhn quipped in 1928 “The Salzburg Festival is a detour the Cafe Bazar is the true destination”.
Step inside Cafe Bazar. Notice the old wooden panelling. Admire the large chandeliers. See the marble tables with cast-iron legs. They give the cafe a nostalgic atmosphere. The cafe exudes Austrian coffee house culture.
