Did King Mueang Kaeo foresee the twists of fate that would befall his beloved Wat Buppharam? Wat Buppharam’s story starts in 1497 with King Mueang Kaeo. He commissioned the temple as a sanctuary for a revered monk from Sukhothai. Now, imagine Wat Buppharam as a serene retreat during the rainy season. Fast forward two centuries, and Wat Buppharam became a pivotal point in Chiang Mai’s history. In 1797, it served as the starting point for Chao Kawila’s reclaiming of Chiang Mai. His victory marked the end of 200 years of Burmese rule and the restoration of Lanna sovereignty. Over time, Wat Buppharam has undergone many renovations. None of the original Lanna structures remain. The temple we see today is a blend of different architectural styles and historical periods. In 1996, Wat Buppharam received a complete makeover to commemorate King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 50th anniversary on the throne. The renovation included the addition of new doors to the viharn (assembly hall). Some ancient Buddhist images were also replaced and a new library was constructed. Wat Buppharam houses a large Ubosot (ordination hall) and chedis containing the ashes of Chiang Mai’s rulers. It even shares its grounds with the Mahachulalongkorn Rajavidyalaya Buddhist University. Inside, you’ll find beautiful modern religious art. Look for the stucco reliefs, murals, and wood carvings. They add a touch of contemporary artistry to this historic temple. Wat Buppharam’s unique “tall and skinny” design sets it apart from other Thai temples. It is surrounded by peaceful gardens and features an ornate gateway. To the right of the temple, you’ll find a ‘chedi’ further enhancing its unique charm. Climb the two flights of stairs and step inside. Admire the beautiful interior adorned in red, gold, and green. You can even enjoy lunch on the temple grounds, immersing yourself in the tranquility of Wat Buppharam. This temple is a true reflection of resilience. It has been reborn and reshaped by time and history.
