The golden bell-shaped chedi, towering above the temple grounds, draws you in. Wat Suan Dok, as it is known, offers more than just serene beauty; it is steeped in the rich history of Chiang Mai. Founded in 1370, it was originally named Wat Buppharam Dok Mai. This temple was built by King Kue Na for the monk Sumana Thera, a revered figure from the Sukhothai Kingdom. It was here, in the heart of a walled city older than Chiang Mai itself, that the legend of Wat Suan Dok truly bloomed. According to the story, Sumana Thera had a vision during his travels. This vision led him to discover a relic of the Buddha, destined for Chiang Mai. He stayed for two rainy seasons, waiting for the completion of the temple. When the time came to house the relic, a miraculous event occurred; the relic, as if by magic, split into two. The larger piece was placed in Wat Buppharam Dok Mai, while the other was carried on a white elephant to Doi Suthep, the mountain directly west of Chiang Mai. The elephant, after trumpeting three times, died on that spot, marking the site for the construction of another temple, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. The golden chedi you see before you is said to hold the legendary Buddha relic. Today, the temple has expanded, offering a quiet retreat from the bustling city. Here, the past whispers through the ancient walls, and the present offers a tranquil haven for those seeking solace and enlightenment.
