Before him however Mr James Hayford a representative of the British Merchant Company had already fostered a Methodist fellowship in the heart of Kumasi. Imagine the audacity the courage to plant a seed of faith in a land considered then ‘dark Ashanti’. Hayford even held services in the King’s palace a remarkable feat for the time.
Rev Freeman’s journey wasn’t easy. Delays in Kusa and Fomena added 48 days to his travels. Yet his perseverance paid off. King Nana Kwaku Duah welcomed him granting permission to preach in the streets. Two divine services followed solidifying the foundation of Methodism in Ashanti.
Freeman’s return in 1841 was a grand affair. He brought gifts for the Asantehene a carriage a table twelve chairs and a lavish dinner set. He also brought back two Asante princes sent to England to seal a treaty a powerful symbol of the growing bond between Asante and the Methodist Church.
By 1842 the first mission post was established on land granted by the Asantehene in Krobo Odumase. That land still holds Methodist properties including the Nana Kwaku Duah I Methodist House the Diocesan Headquarters a remarkable continuity. The Methodist Church Ghana’s autonomy in 1961 marked a turning point. The Kumasi District was born later transforming into the Kumasi Diocese reflecting the church’s growing influence.
