In the heart of Brisbane, nestled amongst the vibrant tapestry of the city, stands Jehovahs Witness Church. A beacon of faith for over a century, Jehovahs Witness Church has witnessed the ebb and flow of Brisbane’s history. Its story began in the late 19th century when Arthur Williams Sr., captivated by the teachings of Charles Taze Russell, began sharing his newfound beliefs in Kalgoorlie. Around the same time, Russell dispatched a group of Bible Students to Australia, and by 1904, Jehovahs Witness Church, then known as the International Bible Students Association, established a branch office in Melbourne. The early Australian Witnesses were a determined group, distributing tracts by train and ship, even throwing bundles from train windows to spread their message. The first branch office, a pair of houses on George Street in East Melbourne, housed the burgeoning Bethel family. A small building at the rear, affectionately known as The Tabernacle, later became the site of their first printing press, bringing their publications to life on Australian soil. Jehovahs Witness Church in Brisbane, like its counterparts across Australia, faced trials of faith. Internal disputes and the death of Charles Russell in 1916 caused some to leave, but others like Jane Nicholson remained steadfast. She and her partner, Enid Duff, became pioneering figures, travelling tirelessly across Victoria. Jehovahs Witness Church also embraced technology. In 1924, they established an experimental radio station in Launceston, Tasmania, a pioneering move for the times. They even used sound cars, playing recorded lectures by Joseph Rutherford, drawing crowds and controversy in equal measure. The 1930s brought the Great Depression, but also the adoption of the name “Jehovahs Witnesses” in 1931, marking a new chapter in their identity. World War II tested their resolve. The Australian government, fueled by war hysteria, banned the organization in 1941. Their Strathfield office was seized, literature confiscated. But the Witnesses persisted, operating underground, printing literature in secret and holding meetings in private homes. Jehovahs Witness Church demonstrated its resilience, even holding a national convention in 1941, with delegates travelling thousands of miles across the country, some in charcoal-powered cars. Their defiance ultimately led to a landmark High Court victory in 1943, overturning the ban. The postwar years saw a renewed focus on preaching, marked by the arrival of missionaries trained at the Gilead School. Jehovahs Witness Church tackled the challenge of reaching remote areas, sending pioneers into the outback, often encountering unique challenges. The construction of Assembly Halls across the country, starting in the 1970s, provided central gathering places. Jehovahs Witness Church has continued to adapt and grow, embracing its multicultural membership and adapting to a changing world. From humble beginnings, Jehovahs Witness Church in Brisbane has become an integral part of the city’s spiritual landscape, a testament to its enduring message and the dedication of its members.
