“First German Lawn Sports Club” That’s quite a title isn’t it? Today we are standing before Hannover 78. This is no ordinary sports club. It’s a piece of German sporting history.
Hannover 78 was founded on September 14 1878. Ferdinand Wilhelm Fricke who was only 14 years old founded it with other students. They were students of the Realgymnasium. Originally it was known as Hannoversche Schuler-Football-Club. “Football” at that time meant rugby.
Fricke recognized strength in unity. He brought the student clubs together. Not all students immediately joined his call. By the mid-1880s the remnants of Germania and the KWG club merged into Hannover 78. The club was renamed Deutscher Fußballverein Hannover 1878 at the request of the Germanen. Later the name changed to Deutscher Sportverein Hannover 1878.
Rugby is central to Hannover 78. The club was a founding member of the Association of Hanover Football Clubs in 1900. Hannover 78 has achieved nine German championships. It also has eleven German cup victories in men’s rugby. The club also boasts 21 national titles with youth teams. 61 of the club’s male players have been called up to the national team. Pascal Fischer is one of them. Currently the men’s team plays in the 1st Bundesliga.
Hockey has been played at Hannover 78 since 1909. It’s not just the largest division but one of the most successful in Northern Germany. The hockey division has about 480 members. The 1st men’s team plays in the Regionalliga Nord on the field. They also play in the 2nd Bundesliga hall. The 1st women’s team plays in the 2nd Bundesliga Nord both on the field and in the hall.
In tennis Hannover 78 is represented by eight adult teams and nine youth teams. Like many other tennis clubs it has seen a decline in membership. In its heyday the division had about 500 members. In 2007 it had about 200.
Hannover 78 was also a founding member of the German Football and Cricket Federation in 1891. It was one of the 86 founding clubs of the German Football Association DFB. School director Hermann Raydt represented Hannover 78. He was at the DFB’s founding meeting on January 28 1900 in Leipzig.
The club has also been active in athletics. Erich Ludwig won the title in the 100-meter run. He won it at the German Athletics Championships in 1903.
The club grounds are in the Sportpark near the HDI Arena. It is part of Calenberger Neustadt. It includes a clubhouse. There is also an artificial turf stadium for hockey. A rugby field and nine tennis courts are available. A sports hall for hockey and tennis is included.
Hannover 78 also played a role in the history of Hannover 96. Ferdinand Wilhelm Fricke wanted to provide his rugby team with playing partners. In 1896 he suggested founding another rugby club which became Hannover 96.
Hermann Löns the heath poet was a prominent member of 78. The Löns Cup is named after him. It is often contested in hockey.
