Amidst the bustling city of Delhi stands the Khooni Darwaza. It silently watches the flow of time. Khooni Darwaza has witnessed centuries of history. It is a chilling reminder of a turbulent past. The Khooni Darwaza, also known as the “Bloody Gate,” stands as a stark monument to Delhi’s tumultuous history. It originally served as the Kabuli Darwaza. Caravans from Afghanistan would pass through it. But over time, it became associated with bloodshed. The name “Khooni Darwaza” arose during the Mughal era. It was a time marked by power struggles and violence. Emperor Jahangir executed Abdur Rahim Khan-I-Khana’s sons at this very gate. He left their bodies to decay. Later, Aurangzeb, Jahangir’s grandson, displayed the severed head of his defeated brother, Dara Shikoh, at the Khooni Darwaza. The gate’s bloody history continued into the 19th century. During the First War of Independence in 1857, the Khooni Darwaza became a site of tragedy. Bahadur Shah Zafar’s sons, Mirza Mughal and Mirza Khizr Sultan, and his grandson, Mirza Abu Bakr, were executed there. They were killed by the British officer William Hodson. Their bodies were then displayed in front of the Kotwali near Chandni Chowk. Even in the aftermath of India’s independence, the Khooni Darwaza witnessed further violence during the 1947 riots. Refugees seeking safety were killed near the gate. Today, the Khooni Darwaza remains a protected monument. The Archaeological Survey of India oversees its preservation. The 50-foot-high quartzite structure stands in stark contrast to the modern buildings around it. Three staircases lead to different levels within the gate. The Khooni Darwaza stands as a sobering reminder of Delhi’s past. It is a place where history and tragedy intertwine.
