How would you like to meet a real life panda diplomacy ambassador? Here at the Chiang Mai Zoo, you can! The Chiang Mai Zoo is a sprawling 200-acre zoo located on Huay Kaew Road. It’s situated just west of Chiang Mai University. Established in 1977, it holds the distinction of being the first commercial zoo in northern Thailand. What makes this zoo particularly special is its role in international relations. In 2003, the zoo welcomed two giant pandas, Lin Hui and Chuang Chuang. These pandas were a gift from China, a gesture of goodwill known as “panda diplomacy.” The arrival of Lin Hui and Chuang Chuang was a momentous occasion, and their presence at the zoo has been a major draw for visitors. In a heart-warming turn of events, Lin Hui gave birth to a cub in 2009. The cub, named Lin Bing, was one of the few giant pandas born in captivity outside of China, making her a symbol of hope for panda conservation efforts. Lin Bing’s time at the Chiang Mai Zoo was a testament to the zoo’s commitment to animal care and conservation. As per the agreement with China, Lin Bing returned to her ancestral home when she turned two. But her legacy lives on, a heartwarming reminder of the power of international cooperation and the importance of protecting these magnificent creatures.
