Have you ever noticed a small, unassuming stone pillar along an old path? This isn’t just any pillar. The Rosenkranzweg Maria Plain Votivsäule, nestled amongst the greenery, is a silent testament to piety and resilience. Standing before it, you are transported back to the early 18th century. This was a time when Salzburg was embroiled in the Spanish War of Succession, and the city was bracing for the worst. Fearing invasion, a devout Salzburger citizen, whose name remains unknown, made a promise to God. He vowed to build 15 stone pillars, each adorned with an oil painting representing the Mysteries of the Rosary, if the city was spared from destruction.

The Rosenkranzweg Maria Plain Votivsäule marks the end of this pilgrimage route, which snakes its way up to the famous pilgrimage basilica of Maria Plain. While the other 15 pillars depict the Mysteries of the Rosary – the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious – this final pillar holds a special place. Its oil painting depicts the miraculous painting of Mary, as it is housed at Maria Plain church, and bears a heartfelt and poignant inscription from the anonymous donor.

“You devout reader, if your devotion encourages you to visit the Blessed Mother Mary on the Plain, do not neglect to pass by and contemplate these 15 mysteries, set up in her most worthy thanksgiving, in the year 1705.” This Votivsaüle is a beautifully preserved historical relic. Its weathered surface speaks of centuries passed, and its rich history echoes the faith and resilience of its people. Today, these pillars are a powerful reminder of the strength of faith in times of hardship.
