Have you ever heard the story of how a city was born from the sacrifice of an elephant? Wat Chiang Man, the oldest temple in Chiang Mai, is where that story begins. We are standing before the temple, its golden roof gleaming in the sun.
Wat Chiang Man was built in 1296 by King Mengrai, the founder of Chiang Mai. It’s believed to be the first temple built in the city, making it an important part of the rich history of Chiang Mai. The story goes that an elephant carrying a holy relic was sent up a mountain. It was eventually overcome by exhaustion and died, but not before circling the spot three times. King Mengrai viewed this as a sign from the heavens, and he decided to build the temple right there.
But Wat Chiang Man is so much more than just a story. It’s a living testament to the unique Lanna style of architecture, a style characteristic of northern Thailand. You can see that in its gracefully tiered roofs and the intricate woodcarvings that adorn its walls. And if you look carefully, you can even spot the 15 elephant sculptures that circle the base of the Chedi Chang Lom, the temple’s iconic pagoda, a reminder of the elephant that helped to give birth to Chiang Mai.
The temple is also home to two incredibly important Buddha images. One is called Phra Sae Tang Khamani, the Crystal Buddha, which is believed to embody the power to bring rain. The other is Phra Sila, the Marble Buddha, a standing Buddha that is said to have been made in Sri Lanka over a thousand years ago. It’s said that these relics are kept in a special vault behind the main Buddha within the temple. However, it is not always possible to see these relics up close. The temple has a beautiful garden where you can find peace and solitude, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
