Question: Ever wonder how a district can connect with its divine protector?

Right here in Arequipa lies a testament to faith called Encuentro con el señor. This is the story of the Señor de la Amargura. It shows us how traditions intertwine with the lives of the people.

Let’s step back in time to the early 17th century around 1620. Picture the traditional plaza of Paucarpata. The parish of Santa Ana became the initial stage for what would become a cherished festivity. Back then the activities were managed by the local parish priest.

Fray Pedro de Ulloa a Dominican priest brought by Francisco Pizarro entrusted these celebrations to Paucarpata. He saw the area’s potential as a place of devotion. The district known for its andenes floridos became the home of the Señor de la Amargura.

Originally the central day of celebration was on a Lenten Friday. But things changed due to excesses during these celebrations. In 1813 the date shifted to a Sunday. This change ensured a more appropriate tone for religious activities.

The brotherhood dedicated to the Señor de la Amargura officially formed on June 19 1927. This year marks their 98th anniversary. That’s almost a century of organized devotion.

The festivities commence on February 23rd with the traditional descent of the Señor de la Amargura. A mass follows. Then the touching of the image and an adobada profondos feast completes the day’s activities. These events set the stage for further commemorations. They honor the Patron Jurado y Custodio of Paucarpata.

The main event occurs on March 9th. Seven masses precede a grand processional departure from the Santa Ana parish. The festive mass takes place at noon. By 1:30 PM the image returns to the temple. The celebrations conclude in mid-March.

The annual celebration connects the population with the Supremo Patrono. It recognizes the Divino Protector of Arequipa. The festivity is an invaluable religious activity for the population.

The story of the Señor de la Amargura involves faith history and community. As you stand before Encuentro con el señor remember the centuries of devotion. Think about the people who have kept this tradition alive. Consider the blend of religious fervor and local culture that defines this celebration.
