Founded in 1848 First Baptist Church of Atlanta has witnessed Atlanta’s history. It’s been a beacon of faith through challenging times. This church has a rich history. From its humble beginnings in downtown Atlanta to its current location in Dunwoody it stands as a testament to enduring faith.
The original church wasn’t a grand building. It started in a simple one-room schoolhouse. Later a church was built but sadly suffered damage during the Civil War. Through the years it outgrew five different buildings.
In 1971 Dr Charles Stanley became senior pastor. His leadership brought unprecedented growth. The church expanded rapidly acquiring every available neighboring property. In 1982 Dr Stanley founded In Touch Ministries. This ministry expanded the reach of his sermons globally. In Touch’s broadcasts reached millions.
The church’s growth was phenomenal. It eventually became too large for its downtown location. In 1997 a momentous decision was made. The church sold its downtown properties. It relocated to its current expansive campus at I-285 and North Peachtree Road. The new location offered ample space. The church continued thriving.
Today First Baptist Church boasts a remarkably diverse congregation. Members represent 98 countries. This makes it one of the most ethnically diverse congregations in America. This incredible diversity reflects the church’s global reach and inclusive spirit.
In 2017 a succession plan was implemented. Dr Anthony George was named as Dr Stanley’s successor. In 2020 Dr Stanley retired becoming Pastor Emeritus. He expressed hope for the church’s continued growth and success under Dr George’s leadership.
First Baptist Church Atlanta’s story is one of resilience. It’s a story of spiritual growth and global impact. It’s a story of a congregation embracing diversity and reaching out to the world.
