Here at Shoreline Park on Shelter Island, this monumental sculpture stands as a tribute. The Tunaman’s Memorial, created by Franco Vianello, was dedicated in 1988. It honors generations of hardworking tuna fishermen. These men hailed from diverse nations like Italy, Portugal, and Japan. Their stories are woven into the fabric of San Diego’s history. The 9,000-pound bronze sculpture depicts three fishermen. They are engaged in the demanding task of pole fishing from a boat. This scene represents the once-thriving tuna fleet. One side of the polished sculpture bears the names of fishing pioneers. It also remembers those lost at sea. An inscription reads: “Tunaman’s Memorial honoring those that built an industry and remembering those that departed this harbor in the sun and did not return.” These words, by Anthony Mascarenhas, encapsulate the memorial’s poignant message.
