The mild climate abundant sunshine and varied terrain proved perfect for moviemaking. Nestor Studios opened in 1911. It was the first movie studio in Hollywood. Soon after about 20 companies were producing films in the area. The first film completed in Hollywood was In Old California by D W Griffith in 1910. Hollywood’s Golden Age from the late 1920s to the early 1960s saw incredible creativity. The first Academy Awards ceremony took place in 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Gone With the Wind remains one of the highest-grossing films of all time. The Hollywood Canteen opened during World War II. It provided free food and entertainment to servicemen. Hollywood’s influence extends far beyond the silver screen. Fashion trends dance styles and iconic concert venues all bear its mark. The Hollywood Bowl a natural amphitheater has hosted legendary performers such as The Beatles and Frank Sinatra. Today Hollywood continues to evolve. New technologies and storytelling techniques captivate audiences worldwide. The Hollywood Walk of Fame a tribute to entertainment celebrities was created in 1958. The Hollywood Sign itself has had a dramatic history. The letters are 45 feet tall and originally cost $21000 to build. It has been vandalized several times notably altered to read “Hollyweed”. In 1978 each letter was sponsored by a celebrity or organization for its restoration. So next time you see the Hollywood Sign remember its humble beginnings and the rich history it represents.
