Across the Main River stands the Untermainbrücke a steadfast connection between Frankfurt’s bustling city center and the tranquil Sachsenhausen district. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a silent witness to over a century of Frankfurt’s history.

The Untermainbrücke first opened in 1874. Johann Peter Wilhelm Schmick designed this impressive structure. It was then 252 meters long and 19.65 meters wide. The cost a hefty 1.1 million Marks. Imagine the sheer effort required to construct such a magnificent bridge in those days.

It wasn’t just a passageway for carriages and pedestrians. The Untermainbrücke also carried Frankfurt’s first electric tram lines. Starting in 1899 horse-drawn trams rattled across it. They soon gave way to electric ones. Can you picture those early trams their bells ringing?

World War II brought devastation. In 1945 the Wehrmacht blew up sections of the Untermainbrücke. The destruction didn’t stop Frankfurt. They rebuilt it. A temporary structure rose on the surviving pillars. This allowed foot traffic to resume. Then in 1949 a new bridge opened. Its steel and concrete beams replaced the destroyed ironwork. The sandstone arches at either end however remained.

Further damage forced another complete reconstruction. Between 1989 and 1990 the Untermainbrücke was almost entirely rebuilt. Yet they maintained the historic design. This blend of old and new makes the Untermainbrücke unique.

Today the Untermainbrücke still serves its purpose. It connects communities and carries traffic. Look around. Notice the blend of history and modernity. The Untermainbrücke stands as a symbol of Frankfurt’s resilience and its enduring spirit. Its story is woven into the fabric of this city. Remember that next time you cross this historic bridge.
