“Valampuri Varasiddhi Vinayakar resides here” whispers the wind as it circles around the Varasiddhi Vinayagar Temple. This Hindu temple stands proudly in Besant Nagar near the beach. The Varasiddhi Vinayagar Temple is dedicated to Lord Vinayaka or Ganesha. This temple isn’t just a place of worship. It is a hub of community activities. The temple frequently holds poojas. It also participates in feeding the poor.

Let’s step back to a time before this grand structure existed. The idol of Valampuri Varasiddhi Vinayakar was originally worshiped at a different site. It was within the CPWD Quarters compound. Now look closely at the sanctum sanctorum. You’ll see the idol of Valampuri Varasiddhi Vinayakar with Consort Siddhi at His left. Notice the small Ganesh idol above. This is the original idol. It was worshiped at the original site.

The first Kumbabhishekam after the temple’s extension took place in April 1979. This event consecrated the temple. Subsequent developments happened quickly. An auditorium was constructed behind the praharam on the eastern side and Goshala. During Vinayakar Chathurthi the temple conducts music programs in this auditorium.

Varasiddhi Vinayagar is also known by other names. These include Ganapati and Vighneshvara. The title Shri is often added before his name as a sign of respect. Remember to dress traditionally when visiting the temple.

Other Varasiddhi Vinayaka temples exist. The Sri Varasidhi Vinayaka Swamy Temple is in Kanipakam in Andhra Pradesh. Legend says that three disabled brothers were digging a well there. They struck a hard object and blood started to flow. The brothers were miraculously cured. Villagers discovered a Ganesha deity in the well. It is believed that this deity is Svayambhu. This means self-manifested.

Another temple the Sri Varasiddhi Vinayakar Mahalakshmi Temple is in Sri Nagar Colony Saidapet. It was established in 1962. This temple houses a shrine for Lord Chandramouleeswara. Residents of Sri Nagar Colony celebrate Hindu festivals with great enthusiasm.

The Varasiddhi Vinayagar Temple is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to faith. It is a place of community and tradition. As you leave take with you the blessings of Lord Vinayaka. Remember the stories and the spirit of this sacred place.
