The cornerstone proclaims 1873. But Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Boston wasn’t dedicated until 1881. This magnificent building stands proudly at the northwest corner of Washington and Adams Streets. It’s a testament to the faith and perseverance of the Irish Catholic community in Nonantum. They founded the parish in 1872 originally calling it St Brendan’s. This was to serve the growing number of Irish immigrants in this area of Newton.

The church’s story is woven into the very bricks. Designed by James Murphy a renowned ecclesiastical architect the structure took two years to build. Funding was scarce. Tragedy struck when a crucial bricklayer died in a fall. The church is a prime example of Gothic Revival architecture. Its beauty lies in its intricate details and soaring heights.

Despite its initial construction the church underwent a major renovation in 1900. This addressed defects in the original build. Three Gothic porches were added enhancing the already imposing facade. These additions reflect the evolution of both architectural styles and the community’s devotion. The rectory a Murphy design too was added in the 1880s. A convent followed in 1890 later replaced by the current Colonial Revival style building.

Our Lady Help of Christians wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a vibrant community center. Records show baptisms marriages and first communions filling the church’s history. The church’s records are now digitally available to the public. This allows people around the globe to connect with their ancestors. This monumental effort took a team of researchers and volunteer transcribers. The sheer number of records is incredible.

The high school built in 1924 once stood nearby. It followed the same architectural style as the church and rectory. Sadly the high school closed in 2012. Today it houses a private secular school. It continues to serve the community although in a different capacity. This reflects how a place can change its purpose while retaining its importance within the community.

Our Lady Help of Christians Church stands as a symbol of faith resilience and adaptation. Its history continues to resonate within the community it once served. It is a living testament to the enduring spirit of the people who built it and sustained it for generations. Step inside and let the stories embedded in its stones tell their tales to you.
