On a hilltop overlooking Chennai, stands the St. Thomas Mount Cantonment. It’s more than just a military base. It’s a place where history, faith, and everyday life intertwine. The St. Thomas Mount Cantonment was established in 1774. This makes it the second oldest cantonment in India. It’s a sprawling area, covering almost 3,000 acres. The cantonment is divided into three main sections: St. Thomas Mount, Meenambakkam, and Pallavaram. St. Thomas Mount itself is a significant site for Christians. It is believed that St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, was martyred here. The cantonment also encompasses the Chennai International Airport, officially known as Anna International Airport, in Meenambakkam. And in Pallavaram, you’ll find the Officers Training Academy. This is the only institution in India that trains officers for the Short Service Commission in the Indian Army. The St. Thomas Mount Cantonment isn’t just about historical and religious importance. It’s a living community with about 42,000 residents. They enjoy services managed directly by the cantonment board. This includes things like road maintenance and garbage removal, often leading to better conditions than in surrounding areas managed by local bodies. The cantonment also has the unique distinction of housing significant landmarks within a military area, blending the sacred and the strategic in a fascinating way.
