Pastor Ha Yong-jo, the driving force behind Onnuri Community Church, dreamed of a church that mirrored the vibrant faith of the early Christians described in the Book of Acts. He called this vision “Acts 29,” a commitment to continuing the apostolic spirit. Onnuri Community Church quickly outgrew its initial space. Today, it occupies five buildings across Seoul, a testament to its growth and influence. These buildings host congregations speaking ten different languages, creating a truly diverse and global community of faith. Within Onnuri Community Church, the English Ministry stands out as the largest English-language Presbyterian ministry in Korea. It’s a hub for English speakers seeking spiritual connection and community. By 2004, Onnuri Community Church boasted a membership of 25,000, which swelled to an impressive 46,000 by 2006. These numbers reflect the church’s impact and the resonance of its message. Onnuri Community Church is more than just a Sunday service. It’s deeply involved in social care, demonstrating its commitment to practical Christianity. In the mid-1990s, the church stepped in to alleviate the financial burdens of Handong Global University, a testament to its dedication to education and community support. Onnuri Community Church also played a pivotal role in establishing CGNTV, a Christian television station broadcasting across Asia. This venture reflects the church’s innovative use of media to spread its message. From its humble beginnings, Onnuri Community Church has become a symbol of dynamic faith and community engagement in South Korea. Its story is one of vision, growth, and a commitment to living out the principles of the Book of Acts.
