They’re a window into Malmö’s maritime past. These fishing huts once stood in a different location, back in the 19th century, lining the city’s coast. They were the heart of the fishing industry, where fishers stored their gear and sometimes even lived, especially during the busiest months for catching fish. But as the shipbuilding industry in Malmö grew, they had to relocate. The Malmö Museum stepped in, preserving some of the most well-kept huts and bringing them to this spot in 1956. The new location on Banérskajen brought the fishermen and their fresh catches right into the public eye, and these huts have become a bustling fish market ever since. Today, they’re no longer just a reminder of the past but a vibrant hub for fresh seafood. The city recognized the importance of these fishing huts for their history and culture and declared them a cultural landmark. They stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of Malmö, a place where the past and present beautifully intertwine.
