Christ Church

Have you ever wondered about the humble beginnings of a grand institution? Christ Church, right here on Anna Salai, started in a rented room. In 1842, Reverend Henry Taylor, noticing the plight of the poorer Anglo-Indians, began services and classes in a simple rented space. This marked the genesis of Christ Church. Christ Church’s story is intertwined with the generosity of Thomas Parker Waller, a local stable owner. He initially offered land, but it proved too small. Waller then traded part of his estate for a larger adjacent property, gifting it to the church. This land, worth ₹12,000 at the time, became the foundation for both the church and its accompanying schools. Construction of the church itself began in 1850, based on John Law’s design. Christ Church was consecrated in 1852, complete with furnishings from the renowned furniture maker, Deschamps. The total cost, a hefty ₹37,000, reflected the community’s dedication. In 1843, two schools, the Mount Road Male and Female Schools, were founded on the property by Taylor’s successor, Reverend Robert Carver. These schools, later known as Christ Church School, provided much-needed education to the local children. Christ Church has a rich history of serving the community. The church remembers Waller with a memorial tablet and a primary school named in his honor. His son, a veterinarian, is also commemorated with a tablet in the porch. Interestingly, another Waller, Bishop Edward Waller, played a significant role in supporting the school with Diocesan funding during his tenure from 1922 to 1941. Financial struggles were a persistent challenge for the school. In 1854, for instance, monthly expenses reached ₹90, while school fees from around 120 students brought in only ₹30. The school’s status fluctuated between middle and lower school due to these financial constraints. The 20th century brought about significant change. Thanks to support from Waller, St. George’s Cathedral, St. Mary’s in the Fort, and St. Matthias, Vepery, a new block was added in 1928 at a cost of ₹40,000. The school achieved recognition as a High School in 1947 and welcomed students from the closing St. George’s Cathedral School in 1949. Today, Christ Church stands as a testament to its humble beginnings. From a single rented room to a thriving co-educational higher secondary school with over 2,000 students, it has come a long way. Its journey is a story of resilience, community, and unwavering dedication to education.
