Is it true that North Chennai’s educational landscape transformed in 1972? That year marks the establishment of Dr. Ambedkar Government Arts College. The college emerged from the dreams of aspiring masses. A co-operative community and an understanding state joined forces. They sought an institution of higher education. This was for the children of North Chennai.
Dr. Ambedkar Government Arts College began with a single undergraduate course. Today, it flourishes with 17 undergraduate courses. It also provides eight postgraduate programs and 11 research courses. The college serves around 3,500 students. Most students come from North Chennai and Tiruvallur.
In the late 1960s, the demand surged for higher education access. The Tamil Nadu government responded in 1971. They identified land south of Madras-Calcutta National Highway. This site would house the proposed college. A fundraising committee was formed. The Madras District Collector led this effort. Film stars participated in benefit matches to raise funds. They helped mobilize the government-stipulated amount of ₹5 lakh. On August 1, 1972, the first brick was laid.
Dr. Ambedkar Government Arts College was initially affiliated with Madras University. In 1974, the college introduced its first undergraduate course. It was a B.Sc. in Chemistry. Five years later, more programs were added. These included B.A. in English Literature and B.Sc. degrees in Zoology, Maths, and Computer Science. B.Com and M.Sc. Maths programs also followed.
The college has expanded its offerings over the years. In 2008-2009, BBA in Financial Management was introduced. Later additions included M.A. English, M.Sc. Zoology, and M.Com courses. M.Sc. programs in Computer Science and Chemistry were also introduced. B.Sc. courses in Statistics and Physics followed. M.A. Economics and M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs were established. These covered Computer Science, Chemistry, English, Zoology, and Commerce.
Dr. Ambedkar Government Arts College is one of the few government colleges in Tamil Nadu. It offers B.Sc. Visual Communication. It also has boys studying Nutrition and Dietetics. The college has a faculty of approximately 95 staff members. The college is located in Vyasarpadi, Chennai. Vyasarpadi Railway Station is the closest station. It is just 1 km away.
The college’s alumni have achieved success in various fields. They serve in uniformed services and the higher judiciary.
