Takemoto Gidayu lived from 1651 to 1714. He hailed from Tennoji Village in Osaka. His real name was Gokudo Heishi. He was born into a farming family. He started his journey with a love of singing. His talent blossomed. He became a renowned Gidayu Bushi performer.

A fire nearly destroyed the temple during the reign of Emperor Reigen. To protect the temple’s relics the ground was piled high. People called this mound Tsuchi-zuka. This eventually became the name of the area.

Takemoto Gidayu’s legacy extends beyond his artistic achievements. His influence touched the community. His contributions were substantial. In 1684 he founded the Takemotoza. This was a new school of Gidayu Bushi performance. This marked a turning point in the art’s development. The nearby Chikaku Monjo Gate is associated with his theatre. In 1703 a play titled “Yekkan Shosei” was performed at the Takemotoza. It was a resounding success.

At the age of 51 he was given the prestigious title Takemoto Gidayu. He received this honor from the Imperial Court. This inscription along with his name is carved onto this stele. It stands as a testament to his life and achievements.
